My name is Ryan Cummings, I am a very proud shareholder and managing director of Whale Logistics Australia.

I started Whale Logistics in May, 2015.

I was humbled and extremely privileged that Ryan Holt, Walter, Damien and Steven chose to take this journey with me.

Since starting I have been incredibly fortunate to have had more talented, hardworking and passionate people such as Vivian, James, Elaine, Grant, Jarrod, Aaron, Alice, Jennifer, Ada, Isabella, Chi, Hera and Natalia join the team.

What was your experience prior to Whale?

It’s a funny story, I was working at K-Mart as a casual while studying for my HSC and at that time my incredible mother was proactively helping me to decide what I wanted to do after high school, either University, TAFE or working.

One night in the lead up to Christmas, K-Mart used to be, may still be 24/7 in the lead up to Christmas and I was talking to one of the security guards at K-Mart and he was telling me about his brother being in imports and exports and it sounded fascinating.

The following day my mother asked me what I was going to do as she did on a regular basis, this time I had an answer, I said I wanted to work in import/exports.

The next day I got home from school, my mum told me she had a job lined up for me, her colleague at work’s husband owned an airfreight courier business and in December 1997 I started working in Freight Forwarding straight out of high school.

I have worked for a variety of freight forwarders which include two of the top 5 global forwarders, two large regional forwarders in Asia and two Australian Freight Forwarders.

I was fortunate to get a lot of exposure, experience and guidance from some great managers and mentors that helped me progress my career and enhance my passion for the industry.

Why did you start Whale Logistics?

That’s a very good question.

I had always had ambitions and dreams of having my own freight forwarding and logistics company.

Having a few friends in the software and tech industries, I started questioning why the freight forwarding industry wasn’t investing more in technology and people to provide better customer experiences and personalised approach to freight forwarding and supply chain services.

At the same time I met my (now) business partner Mr Carter Tsao, he was very cool, calm and aggressive and he wanted to start straight away. I was concerned about starting at the time we did as I had a new 3 month old child, just purchased a new house and having started companies for larger companies before I knew how much time and effort was needed to start a successful business from scratch.

The more I got to know Carter I realised our ideas and passions were aligned and after talking to my wife I knew the time was right to do something amazing.

Our business has had a great entrance to market, we have grown year on year, we have grown from 5 people to 18 people and we have a fantastic team that innovates and provides industry leading service.

What do you think is the key to success in supply chain and logistics?

I believe success in freight forwarding comes down to three points;

1. People and Service

We are service providers, we do not own planes, vessels, trains and trucks our product is our people and we invest heavily in them and our culture so that our product is industry leading and turns our clients into raving fans.

Everything we do must have the customer at the forefront of our decisions, we are always asking ourselves “will this delight our customer”.

2. Technology

Technology is the key to improving productivity and customer experience, it enables and empowers our team to provide best in class service.

3. Relationships.

Having relationships with key stakeholders within our clients as well as our suppliers is crucial to success

What makes you excited to come to work every day?

Our Whale Family. We have an amazing team at Whale which I consider family, I truly believe we have the most unique, incredible and passionate team in the industry which makes Whale unbeatable. Being a young company our team has really bought into and helped create an amazing culture and they live and breathe One Whale One Family.

I enjoy our monthly team lunches and quarterly team nights where all staff around Australia come to Sydney, we have 90% engagement on attendance and every event has been memorable.

What's your favourite hobby outside of work?

My favourite sports are golf and football (soccer) which I enjoy playing but not particularly well. I am big supporter of the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NRL and most of all I love spending time with my two beautiful children Bradley and Rachel. Playing games with them and listening to the wonderful things they come up with really gives my life purpose.

Anything else you'd like to add?

The future is bright at Whale Logistics Australia, we have a lot of exciting announcements and opportunities ahead of us.

In 2018 we are launching our very own technology brand and division that will ensure we are stay at the forefront of technology. This division will be responsible for ensuring Whale knows and works with the best tech in the market, it will manage and continue to develop existing software and BI Applications we provide our clients.

I am really excited about what we are doing in the field of Robotic Process Automation. We have entered into a partnership with a leader in the RPA Space to build a solution that will automate our entire workflow from data entry through task management and completion. We hope that phase 1 will be operational by May, 2018.

We will officially launch our community brand and division Whale Cares, in 2017 Whale Cares donated over AUD 20,000 for various charities such as Smith Family, Surf Lifesaving, Polished Man, November and World Vision. In 2018 we will better target and plan how we can execute and support our chosen charities and communities.

I would like to thank our team at Whale Australia our customers and suppliers for an amazing 2015, 2016 and 2017 and I look forward to what we can achieve in 2018 and beyond.
